Technology

PathoSense is a device for screening the air through sampling and testing for signs of specific airborne pathogens existence is described. The system includes an air sampler to sample the air around the system, a sensory module to test the air for existence of airborne pathogens, a data transmitter to read the data from the sensory module and transmit it to the controller and the user interface.

The sensory part comprises one or more sensor boards including specifically-coated QCM such that the airborne pathogens stick to the coating and change the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the crystals.

In addition, it contains of a recycling part to ensure that the system can be reused after detecting a pathogen in the sampled air. In another embodiment, the recycling part is optional and the sensor can be replaced with a new one when a pathogen is identified.

The described system can sample the air and monitor it for the presence of the airborne pathogens. If a pathogen is identified, the system can then alarm the user through the user interface and/or the wireless communication to take proper action.

We are pleased to share our recent publication, “Recent Advances in Development of Biosensors for Monitoring of Airborne Microorganisms,” which appears in the Iranian Journal of Biotechnology (Mousavian et al., 2024). This review paper offers a broad perspective on current advancements in biosensor technology for airborne pathogen monitoring, including emerging detection mechanisms and recent innovations. Through this publication, we aim to provide a resource for researchers and practitioners working to improve public health and safety through biosensor technology. Read the full article here.

To safeguard our proprietary technology, we have submitted a patent application titled “Real-time airborne pathogen monitoring system and method” (CA3207847A1). This patent application details our system’s unique method of detecting airborne pathogens, which leverages multiple harmonics of sensor frequencies for precise and real-time detection. Our approach offers distinct advantages in speed, accuracy, and the ability to continuously monitor environments for pathogens, setting a new standard for safety in public and private spaces.
